What is a PDO Thread Lift?

A facial thread lift is a cosmetic procedure that lifts and realigns sagging tissue, while adding definition to facial contours, by using PDO threads that are manufactured from the same materials used in surgery to close wounds.

PDO (polydioxanone) is a synthetic fibre widely used in areas of medicine such as general surgery. In aesthetics, the threads help to lift sagging skin as well as stimulate the production of new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin. When placed under the skin via a needle, they can be used to tighten the tissue and add volume to the area of application.

The threads used in the procedure will eventually be absorbed by the tissue underneath your skin, but the lifting effect is at its peak 6 months after treatment when collagen has formed around the threads.

A Typical Treatment

During a typical treatment, local anaesthetic is injected into the area to be treated, the threads to treat the face and neck are introduced under the skin with a needle, which is removed once the threads have been positioned.  As facial thread lifts can be performed under local, rather than general anaesthesia, the patient is able to travel or drive home independently immediately following the procedure.

Recovery time is minimal, with some patients able to return to normal life immediately, whilst others may feel a little soreness, redness and swelling, and require a day or so for this to wear off. However, strong pain relief is rarely needed.

Your Questions About The PDO Thread Lift Answered

The thread lift is most suitable for men and women in their late 30s to early 50s. A person who is generally in good health and is just starting to notice the signs of aging may benefit the most from the effects of a thread lift.

Those who can’t have a surgical facelift because of medical conditions that make general anaesthesia risky may consider a thread lift as a safer alternative.

Thread lifts are considered a low-risk procedure with minimal recovery time. Local rather than general anaesthetic is used, and the PDO threads are commonly used in general surgery.

Whilst recovery time is minimal, there are a few precautions that should be taken following a thread lift procedure.

  • Using an icepack on the affected area can help to reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Touching and tapping the areas which have undergone the treatment should be avoided where possible for at least a week, so cleansing and moisturising should be done gently and with care.
  • It is also advisable not to sleep on your side in order to avoid lying on the treated areas.
  • Avoid saunas and high intensity workouts for the first week or so after the thread lift is performed.

A thread lift is considered to be a low risk procedure due to it's non-invasive nature. However, after a thread lift, it’s not uncommon to experience the following:

  • bruising
  • swelling
  • bleeding
  • slight pain at the site of the thread injection

As with any procedure, you should look out for any allergic reaction to materials used or signs of infection at the injection site. Remember, we are here to talk to if you have any concerns either before or after your treatment.

You will see results from your thread lift procedure immediately after the threads have been positioned, but you may notice more in the days and weeks after, as swelling and bruising starts to subside.

The effects of a thread lift are not permanent but will typically last up to 2 years.
